Book Drink Coasters
Ok, any true loving book enthusiast would agree when I say that you cant have a good book without a good cup of coffee or tea. Am I right? So what better thing to make then some drink coasters that look like books. They were pretty easy to make too.
What You'll Need:
1 or 2 packs of plastic coasters (mine cost $0.88 at walmart)
Mod Podge glue (I used matte mod podge from the dollar tree)
Paint of your choosing
Hot glue gun and glue sticks (or you could use puffy paint)
thin wood to cut to whatever size you're wanting the coasters to be.
Ok so lets get going...
I used two packs of coasters. There were four per pack and I needed six.
Carefully remove the cork paper from the coasters without ripping it. I used a razor blade to help pry the glue up. You can just toss the plastic bottoms. You won't be needing them.
You will now need to decide what size you want your coaster and to make sure your round cork piece fits well on top. I cut my pieces of wood out with a scroll saw but you can use whatever just as long as you get them cut.
Then I got my trusty glue gun out and doodled little designs near the corners so that it will be 3d when painted. If you dont want to go this route, you can always use puffy paint.
I then started painting them after the glue dried. I chose different colors for each but you can do them all the same or different. Just whatever you like best.
The middle isnt very important on getting painted, thats why mine looks only half done. Your cork sheet will cover it. After you've painted top, sides, and back you are ready to move on. Paint Your corners where the hot glue is (or skip the painting if you used puffy paint). I also painted the book ends part of my coasters. Which can be seen in my first picture at the very top but I will repost pic again further down.
You then will want to brush on the mod podge to the cork sheet and apply to the top of your wood. Make sure to press on it and see that it is bonded well to the wood. Set aside to dry.
And thats it you guys, you're all done. So as you can see, they are pretty easy to make. I had fun making them and am having fun using them. Hope you do too.
